Who knew? An hour or so of Spanish study, a long stroll to Quepos, coffee on the beach, some exercise in the hotel pool, a short walk to the market, several chats with strangers, these things made my day today and I feel good.
I am perfectly happy doing nothing productive as long as there is no one around to observe me not doing it. Heck, I am even happy with that sentence.
No doubt this will change when I get back to San Rafael, but for now, I am enjoying the heck out of it.
The rain began a little late today, not until 5:00 PM. I moved from the veranda, where I was listening to people from different countries talk to each other. It is pretty cool, several groups of people, side by side, playing nice. the parallel play of two year olds.
Especially fascinating, is the difference in the Spanish accents. Germans trying to speak Spanish sound different than the French. USA people sound different from the Canadians. Of course, I understand none of them, but I do recognize the difference.
Everyone from Northern Europe seems to speak at least 5 languages. Yesterday. a girl from Holland told me that the only foreign language she studied before high school was English. Starting in high school, she learned French, German, Spanish, and Italian.
Soon I will watch an hour or so of Costa Rica news, trying get the flavor and the rhythm and the music of the language. Maybe some novelas too.
Rain, traffic, murmuring card players, chattering muchachas cleaning the kitchen, crickets--or some Costa Rican version of them--this is as good as it gets, for now.
